John || The Cause for Conviction
  -

John 16:1-2 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.
John 16:3-4 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
John 16:5-6 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
John 16:9-11 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Have you ever tried to convince someone of something they simply refused to believe?
The mission of Jesus never depended on the presence of Jesus’ body—it depends on the presence of Jesus’ Spirit.”
Transition:
1.The Spirit convicts the world of sin.
2.The Spirit convicts the world of righteousness
3.The Spirit convicts the world of judgement
1. The Spirit Reveals the Truth About Our Condition
John 16:9 And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin… concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.
This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” (John 3:19)
Religion treats symptoms. The Spirit exposes the disease.
We compare ourselves horizontally. Jesus measures us vertically.
The greatest sin isn’t simply breaking God’s law—it’s rejecting God’s Son.
John 16:8 He will convict the world concerning sin… concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.
The greatest tragedy isn’t merely that people break God’s commands. It’s that they reject God’s Son.
Our job is to witness. The Spirit’s job is conviction.
2.  The Spirit Reveals the Truth About Our Savior
John 16:10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no longer.
“I’m basically a good person.”
Isaiah 64:6 All our righteous deeds are like filthy garments.
Romans 3:10 There is none righteous, no, not one.
Philippians 3:8–9 I count it all as loss… not having a righteousness of my own… but that which comes through faith in Christ.
Imputed Righteousness & Imparted Righteousness
2 Corinthians 5:21 – He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Our job is to witness. The Spirit’s job is conviction.
3. The Spirit Reveals the Truth About Judgement
John 16:11 …concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
The church faithfully proclaims. The Spirit powerfully convicts.
Our responsibility is faithfulness. His responsibility is conviction.
If I were a better Christian… maybe they would believe.”
You are responsible for faithfulness. The Holy Spirit is responsible for fruit.
God never asked you to save anyone. He asked you to faithfully tell someone.
To the believer….
I don’t have to convince people to become Christians. I do have to faithfully point people to Jesus while trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do.
To the non-believer….
The uneasiness I’ve been feeling isn’t merely guilt—it may be the Holy Spirit lovingly opening your eyes to the truth about Jesus.
