John || Help For Troubled Hearts
RESPONSIBILITES & ABILITIES
“DO I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?”
“Let not your hearts be troubled.”
Christ’s 3 Promises for a troubled heart
The promise of home (14:2)
The promise of hope (14:12)
The promise of Help (14:16)
1.The heart of obedience
2.The help of the Spirit
3. The hope of Truth
1: The Heart of Obedience
John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Liberal or Legalism
The liberal ditch: “Jesus loves me, so obedience doesn’t matter.”
The legalistic ditch : “Jesus loves me because I keep his commands”
Love without obedience is sentimentalism. Obedience without love is legalism.
True Christianity is: Loving Christ produces obeying Christ, and obeying Christ deepens loving Christ.
“Your god is whatever you love the most.”
Ask yourself:
What commands of Jesus am I resisting?
What does my obedience reveal about my love?
Am I trying to obey Jesus merely out of duty, or out of affection for Him?
2: The Help of the Spirit
Slide- John 14:16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,to be with you forever,
Helper – Parakletos – Advocate, Comforter, Counselor
3: The Hope of Truth
John 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you
The Christian life is not sustained by your strength. It is sustained by His Spirit.
